Understanding Brain Degeneration


Alzheimer's disease, and Related Disorders, is used to define a group of diseases that have one thing in common -- each is a cause of mild cognitive impairment.

Dementia is a progressive condition which impairs mental skills that interfere with a person's ability to function in a usual manner in his or her social, family, personal, or professional life.

Alzheimer's disease begins 30 years before the first symptoms appear. It affects five million people in this country. Accumulation of beta amyloid plaques in the brain is thought to be the major mechanism which causes Alzheimer's disease, and can be found in young brains.

Through simple prevention strategies, there is evidence that the risk of Alzheimer's disease can be reduced by 50%.

In Alzheimer's they are number of ways a brain cell die.
Excessive formation of free radicals, which can be toxic to brain cells.
Increased glutamine, which is increased when we are stressed.
Accumulation, of a toxic plaque substance, called Beta amyloid.
Inflammation of brain tissue.
Accumulation of a toxic proteins called tau.
