Can Stem Cells Repair a Torn Labrum or Meniscus Tears?

By: California Center of Longevity & Functional Medicine on April 20, 2019

Tears in the meniscus of the knee, and labral tears of the hip affect countless men and women in Los Angeles each year.

Stem Cell Therapy may help those suffering from the pain of a meniscus or labrum tear.

Though these injuries may result from trauma such as an accident, or a sports injury, in many cases these tears develop over time in conjunction with other injuries to the knee or hip joint. Unfortunately, these tears contribute to overall instability and degeneration of the knee joint and/or the hip joint. When this occurs arthritis soon follows suit.

Stem Cell Injections for Meniscus Tears in the Knee

The role of the meniscus is to protect knee cartilage from stress. In some cases, depending upon the severity of the meniscus tear, surgery will be necessary. However, in other cases, regenerative medicine treatments such as stem cell therapy, may be all that is necessary to promote healing and alleviate pain.

Wherever possible the most minimally invasive treatments for meniscus tears should be considered first. After all, there is evidence that shows that even arthroscopic surgery to remove some of the meniscus may further instability in the knee joint. In fact, according to a study by Rutgers University released in February 2019, the meniscus is very much capable of being repaired and regenerative. Therefore, the surgical removal of the meniscus leads to the removal of cells that would otherwise begin to naturally repair itself.

As an alternative to surgery, autologous, ultrasound guided stem cell therapy injections, use your body's own stem cells to promote regeneration of ligaments, tendons, meniscus, and cartilage. This is because stem cells are powerful healing agents, able to differentiate into various types of cells, effectively repairing damage, while promoting growth of healthy cells. Stem cell therapy for meniscus tears is available from Dr. Allan Kurtz at the California Center for Longevity & Functional Medicine in Woodland Hills.

Can Stem Cells Heal a Torn Labrum?

The labrum in the hip is responsible for providing stability to the hip joint. When the hip labrum-along with other tendons and ligaments-becomes damaged (torn), the result is hip pain, which if left untreated may develop into hip arthritis. In some cases, surgery to repair the labrum, and/or to replace the hip are necessary. But in other cases, stem cell therapy as a regenerative medicine treatment may prove an effective, nonsurgical treatment for labral tears in the hip. Stem cell injections into the hip can help to reduce inflammation, improve the hip joint function, reduce pain, and promote healing of torn/damaged labrum.

Ultrasound guidedstem cell therapy for labral tears of the hip is available in Woodland Hills from Dr. Allan Kurtz, Founder of the California Center for Longevity& Regenerative Medicine.
